New principal announced for new academy
The new principal of the merged Ormiston Ilkeston and Enterprise Academies has been announced today.
Dave Smith, who took on the role of interim principal of Ormiston Ilkeston Academy in January, has been appointed to lead the new merged academy from September.
Dave spent 12 years at Heartlands Academy in Birmingham in a number of roles but most recently as acting vice principal. Heartlands Academy went from special measures in 2003 to gain two consecutive Ofsted ‘outstanding’ judgements as well as recording its best ever GCSE results in 2012.
Dave said: “I am delighted to have been appointed for this role. I have worked with students and staff at both Ormiston academies since January and I’m glad to have the opportunity to continue.
“Parents want the best service and delivery for their child, and I will be working with them to achieve this.
“Through rigorous evaluation of data and targeted support we aim to improve examination results quickly and begin the foundations of a new school with a positive and successful reputation to attract a sizable intake.
“I would move this ethos forward to support the vision of Ormiston to enrich the lives of students and give them a competitive advantage in their career choices.
“The strategic planning essential for this school’s progress is underway and HMI have recognised that the Action Plan I contributed to for Ormiston Ilkeston Academy is fit for purpose. The use of this plan, and that at Enterprise, is key to school improvement.”
Chair of Governors Barry Bainbridge commented: “This is excellent news. Dave will provide exciting and determined leadership as we all work towards establishing the academy as the school of choice for Ilkeston.
“In addition, he will be able to build upon the excellent work which has taken place in both of the academies since January and provide continuity as the merged academy takes shape in the preparations for September.”
Mike Gibbons, Ormiston Academies Trust’s senior adviser to the CEO said: “We are extremely pleased to appoint David to the role of principal of the new academy. The interview process was rigorous with a strong field of national candidates, but the decision to appoint David was unanimous.
“He has done a great deal of good work at Ormiston Ilkeston Academy and we know he is the right person to help create an academy with the capacity to offer outstanding educational provision.
“We are committed to providing an excellent education to the students in our care and the new academy’s strong leadership team will play a major part in this.”
